Tips for Managing Winter Dry Eye

Winter weather can cause dry, itchy skin. Did you know that cold air and snow can also cause dry eyes? Some people may wonder what happens to their eyes during this time. The high winds and the low humidity lead to discomfort and dry eyes.

Although you cannot change the weather, you can manage the condition using a few tips. Keep reading to learn how to prevent and treat dry eyes during winter.

Blink Often

Hopefully, you remember to do this. Blinking is an effective way to keep the eyes healthy while applying natural lubrication. It spreads tears over your eyes each time you blink. As you remember to do it every time, it continuously redistributes the tear film. It ensures that your eyes do not dry out, causing discomfort and irritation.

Artificial Tears

These act as a substitute for your tears. They restore moisture to the eyes, dealing with discomfort and irritation. You can get them at most drugstores, but ensure you avoid those that have preservatives. They can worsen dry eye irritation and make your eyes uncomfortable.

Use artificial tears the same way you would use sunscreen. Avoid waiting until the last minute when your eyes are red and uncomfortable. Talk to a doctor if you use artificial tears more frequently. Six times a day may be the threshold that notifies you that your dry eyes may be worsening.

Eye Ointments

When you notice the condition is worsening, you may first try eye ointments. They are available over-the-counter, and they are thicker than eye drops. Thus, they can provide more protection. To avoid blurry vision from the eye ointment, you can apply it to your inner lower lash line before bedtime.

Indoor Humidifiers

When we use indoor heaters during winter, they dry the air. Although you should not freeze while trying to prevent dry eyes, use an indoor humidifier to restore moisture. Clean the humidifier regularly to prevent the spread of diseases. These devices naturally act as a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. So, cleaning will help rid these disease-carrying organisms.

Warm Compresses

Wet, warm compresses unclog your ducts to help tear production. Making these part of your daily bedtime and morning routine will effectively soothe your dry eyes. It will help you relax after a long day and jump-start your day.

Make a warm compress by soaking a washcloth in warm water and putting it over the eyes for 10 minutes. Rest and let the compress relax your eyes. The irritation and redness will go away, leaving you feeling fresh.

Drink Plenty of Water

It may be hard to drink water during winter. However, you must try and keep up during winter, especially when you have dry eyes. It keeps your eyes and skin from getting dry. It is also healthy for your digestive system. If you have trouble drinking water, you can try adding some fruit or lemon to it. Drinking herbal tea is also a good way of ensuring that you hydrate.
